Last season's stock is sitting in the warehouse. Sales didn't quite match forecasts. Packaging got a bit scuffed and can’t be sold. Returns, perfectly sellable, clogging up space.

It happens with ecommerce.

The usual fix may be to slash prices, run a clearance sale, or write it off entirely. But here's the problem with that approach: it lowers your margins, keeps stock lingering on shelves, trains customers to wait for discounts, and it quietly chips away at your brand value.

There's a better way. One that clears inventory while actually creating excitement around your brand.

Enter the mystery box.

What is a mystery box?

Mystery boxes (sometimes called blind boxes) are exactly what they sound like; curated collections of products where the customer doesn't know exactly what they're getting until it arrives.

The psychology is simple – people love surprises. The excitement of ‘the unknown’ taps into curiosity, the thrill of discovery, and that dopamine hit when you open something unexpected.

The numbers back this up too. The global blind box market was valued at around $3.2 billion in 2024, and that's expected to reach $7.5 billion by 2033.

It appeals to shoppers who crave novelty and experience over predictability, or those prone to impulsive purchases. This tactic offers an emotional hook that traditional discounting just can't match.

Real examples of mystery box success

GM-1Glenmorangie, the heritage whisky brand, had a large reserve of legacy stock they wanted to release. But it needed to feel like more than just a warehouse clearance exercise. Plus, as a brand obsessed with rewarding loyal fans and creating a flawless customer experience, they wanted to give back to their shoppers.

The answer? A beautiful mystery box.

The campaign launched at 10am. By 2pm, every single mystery box had sold out.

Within just 24 hours of selling out, every order was packed, dispatched, and on its way to customers. No lengthy fulfilment delays, no complicated logistics. Just fast-moving stock and delighted customers.

Why mystery boxes work

Instead of devaluing your products with aggressive discounts, you're repackaging them as something desirable. Something worth buying at full price (or close to it). And customers get the thrill of the unknown followed by great products.

There's also a secondary benefit: mystery boxes create shareable moments. Unboxing videos got over 25 billion views on YouTube in 2024. When customers film themselves opening your mystery box, that's free marketing and genuine brand advocacy you didn't have to pay for.

The bottom line

Mystery boxes prove you can move stock strategically without compromising your brand integrity, but adding to it.

You're not creating new products. You're not spending months in development. You're simply repackaging what you already have in a way that creates value, excitement, and urgency.

The warehouse stock you're sitting on? It's not a problem waiting to be discounted away. It's an opportunity waiting to be repackaged.
