TikTok Shop is shaking up alcohol ecommerce - Here's what beverage brands need to know

If you've been scrolling TikTok lately and spotted a bottle of AU Vodka or a Johnnie Walker Black Label pop up in your feed with a "Buy Now" button attached, you're not imagining things. TikTok Shop has quietly started trialling alcohol sales in the UK — and if you're a drinks brand, this is one to watch closely...

So what's actually happening?

TikTok Shop has begun working with a small number of licensed alcohol companies to sell booze directly through the platform. Brands including AU Vodka, Johnnie Walker Black Label, and Estrella Damm's Inedit have already appeared for sale. It's a limited trial for now, but TikTok has been clear that it sees room to grow this out further down the line.

How does it work?

For the time being TikTok isn’t throwing the alcohol category wide open. Right now, it’s working with a handful of approved, fully licensed sellers to quietly test whether alcohol ecommerce can be done safely on the platform. That means most brands can’t just sign up and start selling, yet.

Of course, alcohol sales come with added responsibility so TikTok has put guardrails in place:

  • Users must be 18+ to buy or sell on TikTok Shop at all
  • Extra age checks occur specifically when alcohol is being purchased
  • Delivery partners are expected to verify the recipient's age at the door before handing anything over
  • Only selected, licensed sellers can list alcohol — it's not available to every merchant on the platform

What could this mean for drinks brands?

This is the bit we're most excited about! If the trial goes well and TikTok's age verification satisfies regulators, TikTok Shop could become a genuinely significant D2C sales channel for alcohol brands (especially for brands that know how to turn engaging social content into sales).

Think gift sets, limited editions, bundles and personalised products — all things that lend themselves perfectly to engaging, shoppable content. It gives brands the opportunity to turn product discovery into purchase in just a few taps, while opening up a whole new channel for creative campaigns, gifting moments and exclusive launches.

The takeaway

For now, TikTok is starting small, with strict limits around who can sell alcohol and how. But if this trial proves successful and the age-verification piece holds up, TikTok Shop could quickly become one of the most important routes to market for drinks brands looking to sell direct to consumers.
